In October 2024, the Mekedonia Youth Organization (MYO) was established as part of Mekedonia Charity Homes, an Ethiopian sanctuary that has been caring for the most vulnerable since 2010.

Inspired by the compassion of Mekedonia Home, sisters Evanie and Liana Efrem asked themselves a life-shaping question: What if young people could carry this same spirit of hope into their schools, neighborhoods, and futures?

That question became a movement. Today, MYO is more than an organization; it is a family of young people who find a sense of belonging, grow together, and give back to their communities.

Homelessness is not just a number or statistic; it’s a human reality. In countries like Ethiopia, many people lack access to basic necessities, including shelter, care, and a safe place to rest. With limited resources, countless lives are left vulnerable.

At the Mekedonia Youth Organization, we believe young people have the power to change that story. Inspired by Mekedonia’s mission, we are mobilizing youth in the U.S. and around the world to stand together in compassion, service, and hope.

When you connect with MYO, you become part of a growing family. You’ll hear stories of resilience, join hands in meaningful events, and discover ways to bring light to someone else’s life. Whether you volunteer, become a member, or simply share our mission, know this: your presence matters, your voice matters, and your support changes lives.

Because when youth rise, no one is left behind.

Meet Biniam Belete the Founder of Mekedonia Homes

In 2010, Biniam Belete established the Mekedonia Home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With a compassionate heart, Biniam began by rescuing homeless individuals from the streets and offering them food and shelter in his parents' home. Over time, his organization grew, significantly impacting the lives of countless citizens by providing vital resources and support to facilitate their reintegration into society.

What started with 35 people has flourished into a community of about 8,000 residents. This diverse population includes 3,100 elders, 1,450 bedridden individuals, 1,560 mentally disabled individuals, 1,190 physically impaired individuals, and 200 visually impaired individuals.
